The Era Of Propellor Aviation

The Era Of Propellor Aviation

The 30 years that went by after the famous flight at Kitty Hawk, most of the planes developed were mostly for warfare. There had been substantial development in the plane itself. The drive wheel(like in cars) was replaced by the popular 'joystick' and the planes began to be built with pressurised cockpits. Airliners began to take birth. None of the major countries wanted to be left behind and use to answer rival nations developments by producing superior products. The birth of 'flying boats' also took place in this time. These planes were basically planes built with a boat-like hull so as to give it the ability to land in water. However, most of the flying boats died out by the end of this era too.
In the World War I, the planes were mostly used as reconnaisance or surveillance aircrafts.
But their actual importance in combat emerged in the World War II. A number of countries like the United States, Great Britain and Japan(not under American influence), built aircraft carriers, so as to allow these planes to fight over seas!
Battles were won with superior air forces, as seen in the Battle of Britain. The emergence of logistics by air also gained a lot of importance durinmg this war. Hitler's Army was stuck in Kholm, a town between Moscow and Leningrad. The Germans were constantly fighting of repeated assaults of the Red Army. The army was low on supplies and frost-bitten. Suddenly 20 Junker Ju-52 transports, escorted by two fighter squadrons, roared over them dropping supplies. This continued for three months with the tanks eventually battering their way to the besieged troops and return back with them! The Kholm Pocket had survived thanks to good logistic support!
The existence of air foces and their types became deciding factors of many battles and eventually the war. In fact the foremost reason of Japan's defeat and America's in the War was the fact that while the Pearl Harbour Attack failed to destroy all the ships in the harbour (most of the aircraft carriers were out at sea), the Americans managed to destroy the entire Japanese carrier fleet in the Battle of the Midway Islands. It was only after this, that the war turned in the favour of the Americans.
