Technology Steals the Edge Of Jets

The development of Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) stole the edge the jet fighters had. Now they were extremely susceptible to attack themselves, and if well-planned missions and technological innovations were not put to use, these jets would become sitting ducks. The challenge to develop accessories that will give these planes fairly reliable immunity led to development of technologies like chaffs and flares.
Chaffs had actually come into existence well long ago, during the World War II! However, since then, they used the chaffs mainly to confuse enemy radar and prevent them from finding out the actual numbers of an aerial fleet!
The American defence programs focussed on development of other ways to ward of enemy missiles. The result was the Wild Weasel technology. And its usefullness was proven in the Yom Kippur War!
